M. Bernstein's passion for history began in the 1920's, when a gradeschool teacher in his
native Washington, D.C. ignited his fascination with history. It continued through the
1930's, as the young lawyer became a major force in business, banking and civic life of
the nation's capital. "In those days," he recalls, "people weren't
collecting memorabilia like they are today, and you could pick up remarkable things fairly
easily. It was really fun looking for them."
Mr. Bernstein's association with the Shenandoah Valley began when he bought
Middletown's Wayside Inn in the 1950's. Later he founded the Wayside Foundation of
American History and Arts, which now operates the Museum of American Presidents, the
Stonewall Jackson Museum and Crystal Caverns; which are in turn supported by the Wayside
Inn, Battletown Inn and the Strasburg Antique Emporium.
